CALL BRETT HOWARD |

AUS |
$0 |
n/a |
Sales returns from the 2010 Australian yearling sales have demonstrated more than ever to broodmare owners that are breeding to sell, just how important it is to get your stallion matings spot on.
If you are a relative newcomer to the breeding industry or even a person that's been breeding for years, and you no longer have the time to continuously study the market or work on the theory that perhaps it might be prudent to get help from an independent professional that has watched the Australian bloodstock market closely and traded successfully in it for over 20 years, then you might like to consider using our services to help with your 2010 stallion selections. You are not charged for accepting our advice, you may not even wish to accept it.
Using a bloodstock agent to help you with your stallion selections and in turn your stallion booking, is like using a travel agent to help you choose and book your travel. Travel agents are paid commissions by the airlines, hotels, car rental companies, etc. When a bloodstock agent makes a booking to a stallion, the stud farm pays the agent a commission. This commision is paid only when the mare is tested in foal and the service fee has been paid in full.
A major contributing factor to wastage in the thoroughbred industry is poor stallion selection by the broodmare owner. Mares will visit stallions that are incompatible in areas such as soundness and physique, pedigree, aptitude, temperament, etc. Many mare owners are also guilty of "overmating" their mares, ie, putting too big a service fee into the mare in the hope that they will hit the jackpot in the sales ring.
Some of the other ways in which broodmare owners can greatly inhibit their chances of being successful and profitable are:
- Breeding from inferior mares and/or to inferior stallions (usually poor racetrack performers and/or individuals and/or pedigrees).
- Breeding to stallions that they think will be "commercial", not knowing that in all likelihood there will not be a market for their progeny. This occurs because broodmare owners have little or no "feel" for the yearling market, ie, which stallions the yearling buyers will be interested in in three years time and which ones they will have no interest. These mare owners can also be guilty of breeding to their own agenda, not the market's agenda, which if you are a commercial breeder is definitely a recipe to lose money, but each year literally thousands of mares are mated this way.
- Breeding to overpriced stallions and not shopping around to find out what types of deals might be on offer for various stallions.
We don't unfortunately have total contol over mother nature, so every breeder in the end must accept what she serves up and for this reason luck will always play its part. However, there are breeders each season that manage to turn a profit regardless of the influences of mother nature. These are the breeders (or their trusted advisors) that have an excellent grasp of the above points and this understanding has been acquired by experience and most likely plenty of continuous study. We don't profess to have all the answers. We just take a sensible, rational approach in order to give you the best return for your investment.
The advice we offer is independent. As we are doing a large number of bookings each year, we have our finger on the pulse of which stallions are fully booked, close to being booked, or what deals might be available in the market place. Each season we also take positions in stallions that we like, hence, hopefully being able to secure the stallion nominations at an even more favourable price for our clients. To discuss how we can help you this season, please call Brett Howard on 02 4998 6488. |
